Kotaiah Sweets

A legendary Kakinada sweet with crispy layers and a juicy core that defines Godavari’s dessert heritage.

21 November 2024

During the Mana Godavari Series, I visited Kotaiah Sweets in Kakinada, a legendary sweet shop that has been serving customers since 1891. With a legacy spanning five generations, this place has become synonymous with the famous Kakinada Gottam Kaja.

The Gottam Kaja here truly lives up to its reputation. The sweet has crispy layered pastry on the outside, while the inside is juicy and soaked in flavorful sugar syrup. When you take a bite, you first experience the crunch of the outer layers, followed by the soft, syrup filled center, creating a perfect balance of texture and sweetness.

What makes this sweet special is not just the taste but also the traditional preparation process, which has been carefully preserved by the family for generations. The result is a rich, authentic dessert that represents the culinary identity of the Godavari region.

For anyone visiting Kakinada, trying Kotaiah Sweets’ Gottam Kaja is almost mandatory. It is one of those sweets that truly defines the local food culture.
